8:30AM - 11:00 AM: Understanding the Elements of Renovation of Existing Pools & Spas
David Tisherman - Genesis 3 Design Group
It’s not about replacing tile, re- plastering a swimming pool or upgrading and replacing a pump--- It’s about the possibilities of creating a piece of art and satisfying the needs and requests of the client. The service industry professional, whether contractor, service professional, student or architect, once exposed to the world of proper client presentation, understanding of materials, use of color and hydraulics can and will create a relationship to benefit both client and professional. You must be exposed and understand design techniques before rewards can be created reaped. This class can and will expose the pool professional, no matter what level he or she is working at, to the highest of standards in renovation design building. Both construction techniques and design principles will be discussed and a number of construction “renovation” projects will be viewed and discussed

Max Williams - My Red Zebra
Effective marketing can be spectacularly successful. But that’s not often! Surprisingly, although the principles of good advertising and good promotion are known well enough, most campaigns have something missing. Highly Effective Marketing is something of a rarity.
In this session, we examine ways to make your marketing much more effective. Leverage all the elements together. Whether you’re a manufacturer, a service provider or a retailer, fully integrating your marketing efforts always produces better outcomes. Learn how you can create Highly Effective Marketing!
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM: Voluntary Guidelines
Dr Peter J Seebacher - Standards Australia
The huge environmental and money saving benefits of improving swimming pool energy efficiency have long been recognised by both the swimming pool industry and its customers. However, it has not always been easy to identify the more energy efficient products. This is about to change for the largest energy user – the pool pump!
Working closely with the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA), industry and other stakeholders have developed a standard that gives a star rating for the energy efficiency of swimming pool pumps. This recently published Standard AS5102 (Parts 1 and 2) covers all residential swimming pool pumps that are imported or manufactured and sold in Australia. The labels that are to be displayed at the time of sale, and information on a website will help pool owners to reduce environmental damage and the running costs of the largest home energy user after the hot water system – the swimming pool pump.
Voluntary Guidelines for energy star labelling of swimming pool pumps, in line with this Standard, are being launched in advance of moves to make the Standard mandatory from 2011. Peter will talk about these developments and what they mean to the industry and its customers.
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM: National Builders’ Licensing, and, National Fairness in Contracts - NSPI Professional Development session
Michael Chesterman- Registrar, Adjudication Registry
Michael Chesterman joined the Queensland Building Services Authority (BSA) in 1996.as Compliance Manager and undertook research & implementation of Financial Requirements for Licensing.
This project highlighted a need for improved security of payment outcomes for Contractors and Michael commenced preliminary research into various options in this regard.
In, 2004 the Building & Construction Industry Payments Act 2004 (QLD), (BCIPA), was implemented with Michael appointed Registrar and the Adjudication Registry (The Registry) was formed.
Since 2004 the use of the BCIPA in Queensland’s building and construction industry has been remarkable and is firmly attributed to the pro-active education and support undertaken by The Registry headed by Michael.
Michael continues research and development of the BCIPA, through contract management, education seminars, information fact sheets and working closely with JAG regarding the court process after adjudication.
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM: Water Chemistry
John McKenny – Author and TAFE teacher
Maintaining pool water quality year after year is rarely without its difficulties. It’s said that having a little knowledge can be dangerous, but with pool water quality that isn’t the case. Most situations can be corrected quite simply with just a little understanding of plant and chemicals. This presentation is about “pH, problems, sanitising and stains;” describing pH so you can understand its importance, explaining how to properly and economically sanitise the water, then handling various discolourations, stains and faecal accidents. Plus a full set of notes are supplied as a reference.
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM: Energy Efficient Equipment and Installation
Steve Gutai - Director of Product Management, Zodiac Pool Systems Inc
Steve will present the technical side of the components that create efficiency covering: Pumps: The wetend side of the pump that produces pressure and flow. What creates efficiency from a volute and impeller design perspective. Then discuss the different types of motors, such as single speed, two, variable speed. The mechanics of AC induction and permanent magnet,, brushless dc, with variable speed drive options. How the pump "affinity law" relates to reduce power consumption. Filtration types: Diatomaceous earth, sand & cartridge filters. The media types and sizing to hydraulic system would be determined. Hydraulic system designed for efficiency. Step one would be determining proper installation of pump and filter at the equipment area. Proper pipe sizing, valve usage, heater installation, venting, and layout.
Steve will also explain the Energy Codes in North America and how they relate to the Australian standards.
3:45 PM - 4:45 PM: Legislative Future
Jake Brandish - National Technical & Training Manager
It is clear that everyone needs to get up to speed with the current legislation and the proposed changes that effect the industry. Negligence nor ignorance is an excuse when it comes to explaining problems to Insurance companies and Work Safe inspectors. Accidents can happen far too easily and without warning and businesses must be kept up date with what is required. No one wants to unwittingly void any insurance policy, or break any laws! It is up to each business to make sure they are operating safely and within the boundaries, and as business owners, the onus is on you! Jake Brandish from Focus Products will go over topics such as Pool Fencing, Safety Suctions, Electrical requirements, First Aid, Building licenses, etc.

9:00AM - 11:30 AM: The Beauty of The Edge: Vanishing Edges, Perimeter Overflows and Wet Deck Projects
Brian Van Bower, SWD - Genesis 3 Design Group , Skip Phillips, SWD - Genesis 3 Design Group

Learn the correct methods for creating the tremendous visual and functional applications of water in transit such as vanishing edges, deck level slot overflows and elevated perimeter overflows. Understand flow rate requirements and different edge details for creating various effects, and their relationship to edge tolerances and special conditions, establishing line of site goals and project objectives. Presentation will also cover hydraulic system design criteria, proper sloping and air introduction of gravity flow systems to create efficient flow rates while minimizing noise and catch basin sizing and surge tank sizing.
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM: Combining Ozone with Chlorine: Is it worthwhile?
Mark Spence - Marketing, Ozone1 Pty Ltd
The benefits of ozone-based pool filtration systems when combined with traditional chlorination systems (both salt and fresh water) are being realized by both commercial and residential users. Within this presentation, in non-technical terms we:
1) describe ozone, what it is and how it is made;
2) share examples of its application, both commercial and residential;
3) and discuss what benefits and costs users can expect to realize. Ozone is made onsite, is used immediately, and breaks down into simple oxygen
resulting in noticeably softer, crystal clear water. But ozone is not a panacea: the improved water quality comes at a price, and regular water checks and standard pool maintenance are still required.
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM: Business Planning & Development - 2 Hours Workshop
Bill Kent - Team Horner
In this workshop Bill will discuss the various stages of the business life cycle., analyze financial data to assess business strengths and weaknesses and identify internal and external influences which may change the business cycle and steps to take to move to the next phase of the business life cycle.
This session will assist pool contractors in identifying which business phase they are in, emphasize the importance of understanding financial data and key financial ratios to assist in determining health of the business and help attendees understand the value of strategic planning at each phase of the business.
Don’t miss this skill enhancing workshop if you run your own business
